Before development of dental implants, dentures were the only alternative to replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Now after more then twenty years implants have become a reliable long term tooth replacement option.
Implants are commerically pure titanium structures that are placed in the jaw in sites which were normally occupied by the root. Bone actually fuses with the implant which act as a foundation for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. In some cases dentures can be attached to implants to provide pounds more retention then denture creams so patients can eat and talk without the embarrassment of their teeth falling out.
Most people but not all are a candidate for dental implants. For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have the proper bone density and a strong immune system. In all cases, dental implants require strict oral hygiene.
Implants consist of three parts: The actual implant, an abutment which holds the prostetic tooth, and the crown. Implants are so well designed that they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth.
Surgery is necessary to prepare the missing tooth area for an implant. Once the implant is placed and has healed which can take as little as 8 weeks and as long as six months it can be restored. During the healing period a temporary tooth can be made.
Because implants require surgery, patients are administered anesthesia and, if necessary, antibiotics to stave off infection following the procedure.
Like any restoration, implants require diligent oral hygiene and proper care to ensure they last a long time.
